Two Die in Mining Accident

A mining accident has claimed two lives in the Vitåfors mine in Malmberget in northern Sweden. According to initial reports, an elevator car containing the two men fell down a deep shaft in the LKAB-owned mine, killing the workers instantly.

Both workers were in the elevator car to inspect the operations in the shaft.

"They were in a car that hung from a crane. The crane stood at a level of 1,040 meters, and exactly which level they were on when the car came loose, we don't know. The elevator car landed at a level of 1,136 meters, nearly one hundred meters from the spot where the crane stood," Anders Lindberg, public relations officer at LKAB in Malmfälten, told Swedish Radio News.

The cause of the accident is still unknown.
