Gov't Clubs Through Cash Bonus For Swedish Learners

The Swedish parliament has voted to approve a government proposal Thursday to make bonus payments to immigrant students that quickly pass their Swedish language courses both permanent and nationwide.

A test scheme has given immigrants a tax-free sum of 1500 dollars if they learn Swedish as "encouragement" to learn quickly.

Opposition Social Democrats say they will scrap the plan if they win the next election.

A government study has also suggested introducing courses in Swedish society for the newly arrived. It would look at "Swedish values", the welfare state, and daily life here, including things such as Swedish attitudes to women's rights, homosexuality and the smacking ban.
