Selling Fish with Dioxin

Swedish Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Eskil Erlandsson says Sweden will apply for an extension of its exemption to permits the sale of fish here containing dioxin.

Sweden and Finland have been exempted from the EU ban on selling fish with dioxin, mainly herring and salmon, since the 1990’s.

According to the fisheries authorities here, without a continuation most of the 430 fishermen operating along the east coast would have to close down.

Dioxin is an environmental pollutant believed to damage the central nervous system, the immune system, and reproduction in humans.
