It is illegal to produce, spread, and download child pornography, but from the first of July it will also become illegal to watch it. That is the result of a unanimous decision in the Swedish parliament earlier this week.
There are websites where paedophiles can pay for watching child pornography, without having to download it. Today that is not illegal, but that is the loophole the legislators now want to close. In order to be prosecuted the person has to have taken an active step to watch it, for example paid for accessing the pictures. Also those who have committed a crime against this law abroad is liable to prosecution in Sweden - even though it is not illegal in the country where the crime was committed.
