Red-Greens Demand American Pull-Out

If they win the election in November, the red-green coalition of the Social Democrats, the Greens, and the Left Party will demand that USA abandon all of its international military bases, newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports.

The stance would be a complete turn-around from Social Democrat policy of 2006, when then-leader Göran Persson maintained that Sweden's cooperation with the United States was a central issue for the government.

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt was surprised to hear that the Social Democrats had agreed to take on such a stance, which is traditionally seen as a staunchly Left Party opinion.

If such a demand becomes policy, "we would have problems both in relation to the US and to countries that want USA's help," he told news agency TT.

Other analysts warned that the power vacuum that would arise from an American pull-out would lead many countries to bulk up their militaries.
