The number of on-duty police in some popular tourist towns in Sweden often decreases in the summer despite there being more vacationers and tourists in the city.
Swedish Radio news reports that In Lysekil, a popular boating destination on the west coast, the number of police on duty in July is less than it was in the winter. That's also the case in Östhamnar on the east coast. Because many on the force take their vacations in July, police in the city must depend on backup from neighboring municipalities often tens of kilometers away.
In the past police from inland towns often moved out to coastal towns where people vacationed. And that's still the case on the island of Gotland which strengthens its police presence with officers from Stockholm during the summer.
