Ministry Accused of Misusing Aid Money

The Swedish Minister for Development Assistance, Gunilla Carlsson, has been criticised for misusing part of the aid budget.

Instead of spending money on projects to help poor people in the world a lot of the money meant for aid has gone towards funding new embassies or to administrations costs, according to Magnus Walan, a spokesman for Diakonia, and organisation which coordinating aid from five Swedish churches.

Walan estimates that at least 4.2 million dollars has gone directly to fund embassies and money meant for development assistance has gone into funding programmes for immigrants in Sweden.

But Calsson denies that the Foreign Office are breaking international or Swedish regulations on how to distribute aid money. Although she admits that some of the money does fund administration and embassies abroad she thinks this is necessary to ensure that the rest of the aid is distributed properly.
