American soldiers have confirmed to Swedish Radio News that they have seen Swedish anti-tank weapons in the Iraqi military camp. Swedish Radio has also come across articles and photos from the American armed forces showing US special forces training their Iraqi counterparts with the Swedish weapon.
But the U.S. State Department neither confirms or denies the information, saying they have no such knowledge of a weapons transfer.
The director general of the Swedish Agency for Non-Proliferation and Export Controls, Andreas Ekman Duse, tells Radio Sweden that he would be very surprised if it can be confirmed that the U.S. has violated its end-user agreement regarding Swedish weapons.
"We need to bring this up with the department of defense to see what kind of explanation can be given on the situation," says Duse.
Mikael Baaz, a senior lecturer in international law at Gothenburg University, tells Radio Sweden, "It is very important for Sweden to keep the U.S. happy. That is a political decision that was made a long time ago."
