No senior high - no state benefits?

The white collar trades union federation TCO wants to force young people to complete senior high school, if they refuse then they shouldn't get state benefits if they are unemployed, reports Swedish P3 Radio news.

The federation says that special centres should be set up around the country, helping young people that have dropped out of school to finish their education, as getting a job without the final school exams is almost impossible, it claims. Stopping benefits would be an extra incentive, it says.

Employment Minister Hillevi Engström isn't convinced though, she says that while finishing school is important, not everyone wants to go to the more theoretical senior highs, and says there should be more practical courses and apprenticeships for those that have tired of school.
