Göran Hägglund after Friday's meeting

Support for Christian Democrat leader

The executive board of the Christian Democrat party has issued a statement supporting party leader Göran Hägglund.

In recent weeks Hägglund has come under strong criticism, after the party’s poor showing in September’s elections. The Christian Democrats remain in the center-right government, but recent polls have shown them dropping below the threshold for representation in parliament.

Göran Hägglund, who is also the Minister for Social Affairs, also recently stirred up anger by questioning the importance of one of the party's best-loved reforms, a monthly benefit to parents who do not send their children to daycare.

Following its regular meeting Friday, the Christian Democrat party executive board issued a statement, both supporting the party leader, and taking collective responsibility for some of the recent criticism.
