Polluted water in parts of the north

People in the Östersund and Krokom area should boil water before using it, as it may be contaminated with a dangerous parasite.

The Östersund municipality has issued a general warning to the public, saying that the tap water is not safe and should be boiled - for at least a minute - before being used for drinking, cooking or brushing your teeth.

The affected areas are Östersund, Brunflo, Lockne, Frösön, Byskogen and also Sånghusvallen in the Krokom municipality.

It is the Cryptosporidium bacteria that is suspected to be in the public water supply. It can cause illness including diarrhea, aches and fever.

The local head of environmental protection, Jari Hiltula, says to Swedish Radio News that they are making tests as soon as possible to investigate, and that until they have the results they are recommending everyone to be careful.
