European Court halts 598 Iraqi deportations

The European Court of Human Rights has notified the Swedish authorities that it has taken up the cases of a further 598 rejected Iraqi asylum-seekers.

The European court has indicated that Sweden should stop returning refugees to Iraq, but the Swedish Migration Board says it will only halt the deportations of individuals being considered by the Court. Altogether 813 Iraqis have now turned to Strasbourg to avoid being sent back to Iraq.

United Nations and human rights organizations have previously called on Sweden and other countries to halt the deportations, as the situation in Iraq, especially for Christians, is regarded as unsafe.
