Some work remains to eliminate parasite

Residents in the city of Östersund will be required to boil their drinking water for at least another month after the parasite Cryptosporidium managed to get into the public water system.

But according to the authorities progress has been made to clean the water using UV equipment.

“We are starting to see the light at the end of this tunnel,” Richard Johnson, who is responsible for getting the water clean, told news agency TT.

More than 3.000 residents reported shortly after the parasite had been discovered that they had suffered from severe stomach problems after contracting the bug. But over Christmas it seems most of the 60.000 Östersund residents managed to avoid problems.

Tests now show that the concentration of parasites in the water has gone down but it will still take some time before the bug is completely gone.
