Östersund to flush parasite from water pipes

Some 30 miles of water pipes will begin being flushed tomorrow, a measure to rid the pipes of an intestinal parasite, Cryptosporidium, which has sickened thousands of residents of Östersund.

While UV-filters have been installed at the water works, they only prevent new instances of the parasite from budding in the water. But the bug, which causes diarrhea, can still survive in the pipes, reports Swedish Radio news.

For now, residents of Östersund are advised to continue boiling their drinking water. It could take weeks before authorities give them the green light to drink tap water again, as is.
