No compensation for town hit by stomach bug

Residents of the northern town of Östersund who have had to boil their water for two months, and many of whom have suffered from stomach upsets, due to a bug in the local water supply can't expect any compensation, reports news agency TT.

Despite the fact that the bug Cryptosporidium has caused major disruption for the town, there is no provision to reduce water rates, according to legal experts.

Some residents have sent in demands for compensation to the local council, which runs the local water supply, but because it can't be proven that the bug was spread due to mismanagement, the council can't be forced to pay damages either.
