Bildt: More sanctions against Belarus necessary

After a meeting on Tuesday the foreign ministers of the European Union decided to issue a travel ban on Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukasjenka as well as some of his closest relatives and a few members of staff.

The sanctions come in response to the Belarusian government’s crack down on members of the political opposition.

Shortly after the meeting, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told news agency TT that the sanctions are necessary, but added that unless Lukasjenka soon shows that he is willing to make some changes, more and more specifically targeted economic sanctions will be necessary.
