Baptisms and funerals online?

The Lutheran Church of Sweden plans to post video of religious services, including possibly baptisms, weddings, and funerals, on the Internet.

The Christian newspaper “Kyrkans Tidning” says a pilot project is expected in the Fall, when several churches plan to show services online.

But the subject is controversial, especially the whole issue of putting cameras in churches, which some say violates the sanctity of holy places. When a church in Jönköping in southern Sweden webcast a service just before Christmas there were strong reactions.

But the head of the church’s online department, Lars-Ove Ljungberg, tells Swedish Radio News “We know the Internet is a place where people today meet, and the Church of Sweden wants to be where people meet”.
