There are about 1,500 lynx in Sweden

Fears of illegal lynx hunt

A representative for Swedish hunters says there may be an outbreak of poaching in central Sweden, reports news agency TT.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency says that only 30 lynx may be shot in central Sweden this year, as opposed to 82 last year.

Daniel Ligné, at the Swedish Hunters' Association, says that hunters eager to shoot lynx may ignore this decision.

The Swedish Association for the Protection of Predators (Svenska rovdjursföreningen) says that Ligné is essentially encouraging an illegal hunt, but he strongly denies this charge.

"On the contrary, it would be a catastrophe if that happened, but I worry it may happen anyway" he says.
