The nice weather on Saturday resulted in a relatively busy Walpurgis night for the police, the news agency TT reports. In Uppsala some 90 people were detained due to drunkenness and five, six people were detained for assault. "Worse than normal," say police there.

And in Stockholm, the officer in charge reports of "extreme amounts of drunkenness". Some 50 cases of assault, 45 fired, two suspected rapes and around one hundred people detained for drunkenness.

In other parts of the country, last night was reported to be more or less like an ordinary weekend, whereas in Gotland police reports much fewer problems than norma.l "A great Walpurgis night" is the verdict there.

Walpurgis night in Sweden is marked with great bonfires to celebrate the arrival of spring, and of brighter times. But, alas, a lot of drunkenness is often part of the scene as well, as it was this year.
