Stress tests ordered for Swedish nukes

In the aftermath of the crisis at the Japanese Fukushima nuclear power plant, struck by an earthquake and tsunami in March, the Swedish government is asking the Radiation Safety Authority to conduct stress tests to check preparedness at all the nation’s nuclear stations.

The agency is scheduled to deliver its report by October, including proposals for upgrades to prevent radiation leaks even under extreme circumstances. According to a 1978 voter referendum, all Swedish nuclear power is slated to shut down by 2020.
