One year imprisonment

More punishment for buying sexual services

The Swedish Parliament has doubled the penalty for paying for sexual services to a maximum of one year in prison.

The government proposal maintains that earlier six months jail sentence was too weak and did not give enough consideration for the prostitute's vulnerability.

Sweden and neighboring Norway are the only nations in the world outlawing the payment to a prostitute but not the prostitute her or him self.

Statistics show that 85 % of those 660 persons violating this law which went into effect in 1999 were fined and not imprisoned.
