Only 43 percent of eligible voters took part in Sunday's re-run of last year's county council elections, held in the West-Coast region of Västra Götaland.

The city of Örebro also held a re-election for the city council and there about 62 percent voted.

The Social Democrats received 47.1 percent of the votes for Västra Götaland, which is a significant increase compared to the 39.3 percent they scored in last autumn's council elections.

The conservative Moderate Party lost more than one percent of the votes and ended at 7.2 percent. And the xenophobic Sweden Democrats now holds the balance of power in the county administration after getting 5.8 percent of the votes.
