Politicians speak out on weapons exports

Several of Sweden's political parties have vowed to tighten the rules for Swedish weapons exports.

The Liberals, the Christian Democrats, the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Left promised together in a Tuesday opinion piece in the newspaper Dagens Nyheter to work towards making rules that in practice will not allow weapons exports to dictatorships or to countries with bad human rights records.

The authors added that while Sweden's rules for weapons exports look restrictive on paper, the nation has made more and more money over the last decade by exporting war materials to countries violating human rights.

The article comes less than a week after Parliament decided not to make democracy an absolute requiremenmt for nations looking to buy Swedish weapons.
