Famous elevator permanently closed

The famous Katarina Elevator, near Slussen in central Stockholm, will be permanently closed since its current owners, Folksam Fastigheter, can’t guarantee safety.

The elevator has been closed since late 2010 but the final decision, that the elevator would not open again, was made on Tuesday.

However, the company will continue to investigate whether they can repair it. If that is not possible then they will build a new elevator if the city’s administration allows.

The Katarina Elevator was originally built in 1881 to connect the lock area at Slussen with the mountainous part of Södermalm. The original structure was replaced when that part of Stockholm was rebuilt in 1935.
