Auschwitz sign replaced by copy

The world famous sign hanging over the entrance to Auschwitz, the WWII concentration camp in Poland, has now been replaced by a copy after the original was stolen in 2009.

The sign, which reads “Arbeit macht frei”, was found only a few days after the heist, it had been broken into three pieces. Experts have worked to repair it but the decision was made to put it on display in a museum instead of putting it back.

A 34-year-old Swedish man has been convicted and sentenced to two years and two months in prison for being the person behind the theft.
