Decreasing Swedish support for NATO membership

New statistics show that support for neutral Sweden joining the Western military alliance NATO has fallen – with only 23% in favour - the lowest level in 15 years.

While Sweden has 500 troops taking part in NATO-led operations in Afghanistan and is helping to enfoce the no-fly zone over Libya, it is not a member of the alliance.

Contrary to popular belief, Sweden has not been officially neutral since after World War II, when it changed its policy to one of non-alignment.
