Berlin-based Swede Charged with Sex Abuse against Children

A 67-year-old Swedish man, arrested in the middle of May on suspicions of sexually abusing children in Germany and Haiti, has been charged with 20 counts of sexual abuse against children, Swedish Radio News reports.

The 67-year-old Swede was arrested in May in Germany on suspicions of sexually abusing children there and in Haiti, and has been charged with 20 counts of sexual abuse against children, Swedish Radio News reports.

Martin Steltner, a spokesperson with the Swedish prosecutor’s office, told Swedish Radio News that the 67 year old man is also under investigation for a case of sexual abuse that occurred in Haiti last year.

Police have been investigating the Swedish man since the middle of April, after he and a German man were arrested at Munich airport in the company of an 11-year-old Haitian boy, reports Swedish Radio News.

The boy was travelling under a false passport, and both men were held on suspicions of trying to bring the boy out of the country for use in the sex industry.

Swedish Radio News reports that pictures of child pornography were confiscated in conjunction with the arrest, and during a subsequent search of the suspects' homes the police found more photos of naked children in the company of several adults.

Steltner would not confirm whether the 67-year-old Swede was among the adults pictured in the photographs, but it was at the time of finding the photos that the investigation against him was initiated, reports Swedish Radio News. He was arrested shortly thereafter at his apartment in Berlin.

Charges against the 67-year-old Swede include several counts of sexual abuse against children during to 2002 and 2003. He has been living in Berlin for about 10 years, working as a school teacher, writes Swedish Radio News.

While his involvement in the child sex trade has not yet been established, it is under investigation, and it has been confirmed that he belonged to the same relief organisation as one of two other main suspects, Swedish Radio News reports.

The relief organisation purports to help street children and is said to have run an orphanage, among other things, in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti.

According to police and the prosecutor, the other suspect, a 57-year-old German man, has previously served a several-year prison sentence for sexual abuse against children.

Steltner told Swedish Radio News that both men are believed to have been there together several times and are suspected of sexually abusing young boys there.
