More killed in road accidents

The number of pedestrians killed in road accidents during the first half of 2011 is more than double that of the same period last year, according to new statistics, and many of those killed were over 65.

Jan Sandberg from the The National Society for Road Safety told TT the increase was not unexpected due to the the low number killed in traffic last year, but added the size of the increase was unexpected, and the fact that pensioners were most at risk.

28 pedestrians died in traffic between January and July this year, just 11 were killed in the same period in 2010.
