Another three infected by waterborne parasite

Three people in the northern town of Skellefteå have been infected by the parasite Cryptosporidium, despite having boiled their water as recommended. None of the three has been abroad recently and it is unclear how they contracted the parasite, reports Swedish Radio News.

Stephan Stenmark, a doctor with Skellefteå county council who specialises in disease control, says he cannot see any link between the three cases or with the earlier outbreak of the same parasite in the town back in the spring. Cryptosporidium can cause gastro-intestinal illness and diarrhoea.

Despite these new cases, Stenmark believes that the plan to end the recommendation for inhabitants to boil drinking water can still go ahead on 6th September.
