Malnourisment rife among elderly at care homes

Nine out of ten of the elderly people at Uppsala's four homes for the elderly are either malnourished, or risk becoming so, according to a study from Uppsala University.

Out of the 172 resident, 30% were classed as malnourished, while 63% were in the risk zone. Only 7% were deemed as well-fed, Upsala Nya Tidning reports.

There are often medical reasons for the elderly not eating enough, but the researchers believe that fewer would be malnourished if they had more influence in terms of what and when they eat, and if the food was served in a more pleasant environment.
