New project to improve Million Programme areas

Many of the buildings in the so-called Million Programme areas are falling apart, brick-by-brick, but until recently politicians and investors showed little interest in restoring the old structures.

But now, a new project is trying to rally support from those who live there without the help from politicians.

The Million Programme was an ambitious housing project which attempted to solve a growing housing crisis and provide all city dwellers with affordable homes. The goal was to build one million apartments between the years of 1965 and 1975 while also demolishing old, unfit buildings.

The goal was reached and more than a million new apartments were built.

However the new houses were built to function rather than to be beautiful and today most associate the word with gray concrete suburban buildings.
