New multi-resistant bacteria found in cattle

A new type of the multi-resistant bacteria MRSA has been discovered in Swedish cows, Swedish Radio News reports.

The National Veterinary Institute regularly tests cattle to find signs of MRSA, a strain of staph bacteria resistant to almost all kinds of antibiotics.

The new strain has been found in both humans and cattle before, but it has been difficult to discover. But so far the discovery is not cause for concern, according to Helle Unnerstad, who works at the National Veterinary Institute.

“The bacteria is transferred through physical contact so the biggest risk is for those who work close to animals,” she told Swedish Radio News.
