Average interest rate is 3.9 percent

The average Swedish homeowner pays 3.9 percent interest on their mortgage, according to the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet's interactive housing loan map. Swedish bank SEB has the lowest interest rat while SBAB has the highest.

Close to 20 000 people have entered details about their home loans on the newspaper's website.

The newspaper initially asked Sweden's four main banks to get an estimated average interest rate but were told that it wasn't possible. But this shows that you can negotiate for a better interest rate, says economist Annika Creutzer.

"My advice is to talk to at least three banks and do it a couple of times."
