Sunday deadline for studded tyres

Sunday is the last day for drivers to change to regular tyres - but the icy roads in parts of Sweden may mean police will not punish people caught driving with studded tyres.

Swedish Radio talked to traffic police Lennart Hjelm. He says that the 15th of April is officially the deadline for studded tyres ('dubbdäck'), but that the police will definitely take into account whether a particular area still has wintry conditions, when deciding whether to fine someone caught with studs. Snow, ice or frost could all make studded tyres acceptable.

The dubbdäck tyres are essential for Swedish drivers during the winter, but on dry roads the metal studs rip up tiny particles from the road, damaging the street and also causing air pollution.
