Young woman denied internship

Hair salon compensates student with veil

A female high school student who was refused an internship at a hair salon for women because she wears a veil was compensated by the salon Wednesday, TT news agency reports. The owner of the salon, located in the southern city of Malmö, agreed to pay the student 4,500 US dollars in damages and apologize.

The owner’s argued that it's not possible to wear a veil or any other headdress when running a hair salon.

“I can’t dress up like a gogo girl and run a salon. And I can’t dress like you if I want to be a gogo girl,” she told the young woman.

Neither police nor the Discrimination Ombudsman wanted to pursue the case. Instead, the student hired a lawyer and sued the hair salon for 25,000 US dollars in damages.
