EU to Stregnthen Fight against Drugs

European Justice Ministers have agreed to increase cooperation in the fight against drugs, but some, including Sweden, complain that the new strategy does not force lax countries like Holland to tighten their laws.

Ministers laid out guidelines for measures to cut supply and demand of illegal drugs by 2012, including improved coordination among both members of the bloc and with other countries on drug trafficking routes.  But Sweden complained that the plan failed to build on an earlier agreement under which all 25 EU members would aim for equally severe punishments for drug offences.  Sweden especially has complained about the Netherlands, where coffee houses sell cannabis and other soft drugs openly.
