Snowstorms Cause Chaos in Sweden

Heavy snowstorms blanketed most of southern and central Sweden late Monday and early Tuesday, disturbing air and road traffic.

The weather also left more than 15,000 homes and businesses temporarily without power. Stockholm’s Arlanda airport was also forced to cancel several flights Tuesday morning and through the afternoon.

The Baltic island of Gotland was also hit hard by the snow storm. Five sailors were rescued by a helicopter Tuesday from a tug boat that ran aground near the island during the heavy snow storm. The crew were equipped with cold weather gear.

According to the Swedish Maritime Administration, a second ship with 28 crew members also ran aground in the same area, but that vessel was not in any danger.
