Funeral of royal uncle of Sweden and Denmark

Most of the Swedish royal family was present Monday for a funeral service for King Carl Gustaf’s uncle, Carl Johan Bernadotte, at St. Mary’s Church in Bästad in southern Sweden. Queen Margrethe of Denmark, a niece of Carl Johan Bernadotte, was also present.

Count Carl Johan Bernadotte af Wisborg died on May 5, at the age of 95. Both he and his brother Sigvard married commoners in an age where that was controversial, and had to give up their titles as prince.

The coffin is being taken to Stockholm where a special service will be held Tuesday in the chapel in the royal palace.
