Burundi man suspected of syping on refugees

Suspected spy held by Swedish police

Published onsdag 16 maj 2012 kl 15.10

A Burundi man was remanded in custody in Sweden on Wednesday suspected of spying on refugees in the central Swedish town of Örebro in 2010 and 2011, press reports said.

The man was arrested on Monday and appeared before the Örebro district court on Wednesday in a custody hearing held behind closed doors.

The man is formally suspected of carrying out "aggravated illegal intelligence operations," which according to Swedish news agency TT covers crimes against Swedish national security on behalf of a foreign power.

Charges are scheduled to be pressed on May 30, but the prosecutor said he is likely to seek an extension because of the large scale of the investigation.
