Can volunteering pave the way to a job?

"There was always this barrier . . . you have to speak Swedish."

One group struggling to get onto the labour market are people who have followed their spouses to Sweden. Claire Thomas moved to Sweden a year and a half ago when her husband got a job here. After a lot of difficulty trying to find a job of her own, she came up with a unique solution.

Thomas hopes the English Volunteering Project, which she is still getting off the ground, will help non-Swedish speakers in a number of ways. Through volunteering, she believes expats will be able to gain Swedish references, which they could later use when applying for jobs.

"I have references now from volunteering things I've done that I can take to employers, and they're Swedish references, so they'll have more value," says Thomas.
