The Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control has reported 951 cases of gonorrhea here last year, an increase of 13 percent from the year before.
The largest increase is among young women in metropolitan areas. In Stockholm County, for example, the incidence of the disease increased by 89 percent among women. The agency is also concerned about an increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is making treatment more difficult.
There’s also been an increase in syphilis, mostly among men, and especially among men who have sex with men. Nevertheless, the institute says, the number of cases of the disease remains low.
