Sweden worst at catching burglars

The newspaper “Dagens Nyheter “ reports that the police in Sweden are worst in the Nordic region in catching burglars. The rate of solved home break-ins here is only around 4 percent.

That compares to 7 percent in Denmark, 15 percent in Norway, and up to 26 percent in Finland.

Jyrki Pelkonen of the Finnish police tells the newspaper their message to criminals is that it doesn’t pay to commit crimes there.

A Swedish police researcher attributes the low figure here to reorganization within the police. But Swedish Justice Minister Beatrice Ask rejects that explanation. She tells the TT news agency that she intends to take up the question with her Finnish counterpart at the next meeting of Nordic justice ministers.
