Who will pay for nuclear waste?

State investigators have asked for more time to complete their study looking into whether nuclear power companies should have to shoulder more of the economic burden of storing nuclear waste.

The government is expected to make a decision Thursday about whether to grant the investigators another year, according to Swedish Radio news.

The investigators were supposed to have presented their conclusions to the government on Thursday.

Companies currently have to set aside 2 öre (about one-fifth of a cent) per kilowatt-hour of nuclear electricity towards nuclear-waste-related costs, however new assessments suggest they may have to as much as triple this contribution.
