Sterilization before sex change stays

Next July is the earliest that lawmakers might be willing to end a controversial law that affects transsexuals.

Currently, transsexuals must get sterilized before going ahead with sex change surgery.

The left-leaning opposition wants to get rid of the sterilization requirement this July, but the parliamentary committee on social affairs has indicated it will support the government's suggestion to put off looking into the issue until next summer.

The committee has also decided that people who want sex change operations no longer need to be Swedish citizens or unmarried. Those amendments will go into affect in January.
