Swede dies in Afghanistan with US Army

Staff Sgt Eric Hammar was killed in Afghanistan fighting with the US Army

A 24 year old Swede who was fighting with the American army in Afghanistan has been killed in action.

According to the Pentagon, Staff Sgt Eric Hammar was in Khost province on July 14 when his patrol came under fire by Taliban using rocket-propelled grenades.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that 22 vehicles were destroyed in the attack. Eric Hammar was reportedly wounded early in the fire fight and later died in a military hospital.

Eric Hammar reportedly went to the United States as an exchange student and had dual citizenship, making his home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He had been in Afghanistan since December, and served two tours in Iraq.

There are around 500 Swedes serving in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led Isaf force. Five have lost their lives in action.
