Klüft withdraws from Olympics

Swedish track and field star Carolina Kluft has pulled out of the upcoming Olympics in London. Klüft, who has been troubled by a shin injury all year, was forced to pull out of a meet in Finland over the weekend without completing a single jump.

Klüft dominated the heptathlon for years, before switching events to the long jump, where success has been more elusive.

Speaking to Swedish television after her decision to pull out of the Olympics, Klüft says she will now end her season and her athletics career in slightly more low-key surroundings in the Swedish championships and the traditional Finnkampen meet between Sweden and Finland later this year.

Klüft was world champion three times as a heptathlete, and won the Olympic gold medal in the Athens games in 2004. As a long jumper her best result in an outdoor event was fifth in the world championships in Daegu in 2011.
