More arson in Ystad

There are fears a serial arsonist could be at large in the southern town of Ystad following the sixth large fire in the town in two weeks.

Last night's fire hit a family home. The owners are currently away on holiday, and their home was badly damaged in the fire, police say, adding that the fire was probably started deliberately.

Previous incidents over the last fortnight include fires in a gold club, tennis club, storage tents and a summer cottage. No one has yet been hurt in the incidents.

Local police tell news agency TT it is too early to tell if the same person is behind all the fires.

They are sure however, that the fires have been carried out in a systematic manner. According to Dan Granvik, a local criminal inspector, the arsonist or arsonists have clearly been inspired by the so-called "Dawn Pyromaniac", a man who was jailed for starting fires in the early morning hours in historical wooden buildings in Ystad in 2011.

Granvik tells TT that although no people have been present in the buildings that have been set on fire, the arsonist may be a beginner, and could make the mistake of targeting a house with people in it.

"Then this person could be very dangerous", he says.
