Internal budget controversy

Agency spends millions on fine dining

The Agency for Economic and Regional Growth has since 2010 spent more than US$ 2 million on seminars, conferences and liaising with clients, reports the newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

At the same time, the agency has asked the government for budget increases to handle operations.

According to the agency's own guidelines, restaurants for internal events should be chosen with costs in mind. But its staff has frequented some of Stockholm's most up-market establishments.

Christina Lugnet, the agency's director general, says she has to approve event budgets submitted by mid-level managers.

"There can be cases that have got through that I agree should not be a part of our operations," Lugnet said when Dagens Nyheter approached her with the findings.
