Kindergartens at night for children of shift workers may soon become a reality in Stockholm, according to local radio station P4 Stockholm.

Stockholm Mayor Sten Nordin says he is to set up a study to look into the demand and adds that it is "a natural step". Nordin says there are a lot of single parents in the city who do not work office hours, and that their childcare needs also have to be met.

"Stockholm is a city that is awake 24 hours a day", he says.

30 local councils are to start offering 24 hour day care this year, bringing the total to just over half the councils in Sweden.
