Sweden Democrat Erik Almqvist steps down

Top Sweden Democrat politician, Erik Almqvist, has left his post as economic and political spokesperson and his position on the party board over a video showing him using derogatory and racist language during an argument in central Stockholm in the summer of 2010. Sweden Democrat leader, Jimmie Åkesson, announced the news at a press conference today.

In the video, published by the Expressen newspaper, Almqvist calls a 21-year-old woman a “whore”, kicks a drunk man, and uses racist terms in a verbal argument with the comedian Soran Ismail.

The film was shot by Kent Ekeroth, the current party spokesperson, on his mobile phone.

Last month, Åkesson, wrote a letter to members explaining that there is a zero-tolerance policy towards racism within the party. He also promised a "clean-up" among the party rank-and-file after a slew of controversial statements.

The Sweden Democrats held a crisis meeting today to discuss the video and how to proceed.
